This book answers the question about what Anne was doing during her (at least) three-year engagement to Gilbert Blythe. As I am reading the Anne books in order of Anne’s age, and not in order of publication, this wasn’t a question that had occurred to me. The answer is that Anne moved away to become the principal of a school in another town. As in Anne Of Avonlea, the reader gets very few looks into the classroom – Anne’s three years are related mostly by her adventures in the evenings and on weekends. These adventures include an almost ghost story, censored love letters to Gilbert, and an adult spanking scene! This installment is the fourth by order of Anne’s age, but seventh by order of publication, and it feels exactly like a late-in-the-day offering tacked onto a popular series, almost like a reunion episode of your favourite TV show.
