While I'm a big Turtledove fan, this series is, as someone else put it, a dud. My main problem is how little trouble this "mega disaster" causes. I wouldn't be surprised if the USA was in as bad of shape in ten or fifteen years WITHOUT such a disaster. With it, multiply the problems portrayed in this series by 50. I do wonder if, perhaps, that might have been the authors intent: Here's your near future and how to live in it, rather than anything to do with a big event. My second biggest is that even with things being so (relatively) soft the book mostly follows folks who have it even softer... In terms of his war books: Rather than the equivalent of "front line" soldiers AND the home front, this book is just the home front. On the rare occasions when a character gets somewhere rough, they get back to soft (dull) land pretty quick.
