It's Pendergast back in action after brief downward spiral and it does get better than this but not by much. It has Pendergast which guarantees a good read! Odd things in life, depressed after ordeal w/ thought to be dead but not wife, bizarre murders in NYC where DNA purposefully left. D'Agosta, a tough but compassionate cop asks his FBI Buddy for help, next thing you know Pendergast finds he has twins & one follows the family penchant for insanity & cruelness. A chase & suddenly Pendergast in S America, a town full of secrets, nazis, experimentation, twins everywhere, nazi underground island mountain blow-up, Pendergast has met his match. Great ending to this trilogy, his son eerily familiar to brother Diogenes and certain to be in upcoming novel. Much better read in correct order but if read alone is still an exciting thrill ride of a book!
