Interrogator: "Now then. There are two types of confession. We call them 'toothpaste' and 'water tap'. The 'toothpaste' needs to be squeezed every now and then, or else he forgets to keep confessing... The 'water tap' needs one good hard twist before he starts, but then everything comes out. Now you're an intelligent person... I'm sure you understand me... Good. Then we'll begin. Why do you think you're here 9-8-1?" Emperor Pu Yi: "I am accused of being a traitor, a collaborator, and a counter-revolutionary." Interrogator: "IT IS NOT AN ACCUSATION! YOU ARE A TRAITOR! YOU ARE A COLLABORATOR! AND YOU ARE A COUNTER-REVOLUTIONARY!!!"
Pu Yi (age 15): "Is it true, Mr. Johnston, that many people out there have had their heads cut off?" Reginald Fleming 'R.J.' Johnston: "It is true, your majesty. Many heads have been chopped off. It does stop them thinking."

But now he's growing up, he may wonder why he's the only person in China who may not walk out of his own front door. I think the Emperor is the loneliest boy on Earth."

Very slow.
Imagine the burden of being the final figure of the Qing Dynasty. An illustrious and long running dynasty. The movie made me question the wisdom in dispensing with the Chinese monarchy. To lose so much tradition and never be able to gain it back.... Most nations held on to their monarchies; I suppose in this case being Manchu it would have been awkward.
While it was an interesting story regarding the life of the last emperor of China, at times the movie was not as interesting, especially in the middle. None of the performances were memorable.
One of the best films I have seen in this year. It was entertaining and interesting. Great performances a must see for all. Truly a really great movie worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box. Well worth the price of admission to any theater.
It was a very interesting story of Puyi (the last emperor). But it was also really sad. The poor man.
This epic 1987 historical drama from Bernardo Bertolucci was his tour de force. Nine Academy Awards. Wow. Emperor Pu Yi's life was so woefully misfortunate. Held captive in a palace from age three, wanting for virtually nothing material, but needing for everything of substance. Freedom. Family. Imprisoned on one level or another for his entire life, effectively. Isolated, as a symbol to the people, with eunuchs, in the name of some archaic, cruel tradition... (Actually, he did have two gorgeous women in his bed, also... maybe I should rethink this...). A powerless ruler. Ironic. This China was depicted as a truly dark, frightening place -- not a smile for miles, except for a smirking Peter O'Toole. Magnificent, illustrious cinematography of the ornate Forbidden City, (which Bertolucci was given permission to film in). A one of a kind masterpiece. FIVE STARS.
The Last Emperor is breathtaking in its cinematography. If you haven't seen this film, get off of your rear end and check it out. This movie is absolutely amazing on so many levels, guaranteed not to disappoint!
It was a good movie, but a bit slow at times.
