An interesting take on what goes on behind the scenes, so to speak, of a virtual reality, online role-playing game. While I can't say that I understood it all, I enjoyed the descriptive visualization of computer code as trees and a landscape that can be walked through.

I loved this novel - one of the best fiction reads I have had in a long time. Having said that, I can see that someone who does not quickly pick up vocabulary from context might find the "tech speak" to be a hindrance, though to me it added to the authenticity of the writing. Duane researched the world of online game coding to create this novel, and the effort pays off. Although the plot fundamentals are very similar to those of Stealing The Elf King's Roses by the same author (which I also loved), this is a great read and holds its own regardless. I am still thinking about what I would do if given my own "Microcosm", and wishing I could play Omnitopia myself!

The story is sound, and I enjoyed the characters. The only problem I had was with this story was the pacing. There were long periods of tech speak followed by short and sporadic moments of action. Even still, the book held my interest and set up nicely for a sequel that I hope will come. Those who liked Cline's Ready Player One or Williams's Otherland series might want to pick this up.

I've heard there's a sequel to this now available...?

Diane Duane creates a place where I would dearly like to be. I really would like to try the "real feel" headset to interact with the game. It is a great read and a "feel good" book.
