Horrible crap! Waste of time and life!

A girl-meets-boy story told in what is becoming a cookie-cutter Malick style: Take the magical realist imagery from THE THIN RED LINE and THE NEW WORLD, accentuate the sententious voice over of the principal characters, and then bleach away 90% of the narrative. The story is supposed to be about the music world, or at least takes place with the music industry as backdrop, but you get no sense of what the musical opiate is. Something interesting is being said about Romantic love, and there are plenty of interesting cameos featuring the giants -- Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, John Lydon -- but the overall impact is softened or lost completely because of repetitiveness.

Yeah, if you are not already a hardcore Malick fan, then I wouldn't waste your time. Start out with Badlands or the Thin Red Line. I like that his films are like no one else's. They are all very dreamlike and the thread of them always feels very ephemeral. Most moviegoers do not like to feel uncomfortable and do not like not understanding what is going on. I mean there are lots of current Hollywood films out that are essentially film making by the numbers. Personally, I like different and I like "Art" films. If you don't like any of that stay away, if you do, you might like this one.

Possibly the greatest disparity between "best cast" and "lousy movie" I've ever encountered. There is nothing redeeming in this film. It's too long, too pointless, too self absorbed, and none of the characters are likable.

Amazing cast, but poor execution and way too long.

Despite an all-star cast, this was truly one of the worst movies I've ever seen. In Days of Heaven, the spectacular cinematography carried the film. But the beautiful cinematography could not carry the turgid weight of Song to Song. Mara's shallow vapid main character, the general lack of character development or even plot, and the disjointed presentation made the movie boring and even irritating. We watched the whole thing, just to see if something would redeem an otherwise nauseating experience. No such luck.

You have to be a Malick fan to sit through this one. With signature first-person narratives, and the use of hand-held cameras, this film may not have much to offer for most. However, some images are well crafted, and as an art-house piece I think it is still watchable.

With SONG TO SONG (2017), director Terrence Malick seems intent upon finishing out the decade the same way he started it-- with deeply personal, religious films about faith, love, and redemption set against the decaying backdrop of contemporary America. Those familiar with Malick’s previous efforts TO THE WONDER (2012) and KNIGHT OF CUPS (2016) may see these works as together forming a sort-of-trilogy in which the subjects of each film navigate similar pseudo-heroic arcs that lead them out of worlds of confusing excess and toward a redemptive vision of beauty and truth.

The film’s circuital editing can be frustrating at times, and intoxicating at others. Emmanuel Lubezki’s camerawork is as proficient and deliberate as ever, and there is something to savor in every shot. (Note the subtle changes in elevation throughout the film and consider these details in light of the film's original title, "Weightless.") The film’s genre-spanning score, a mix of contemporary indie rock, classical music, and opera, complements the film’s preoccupations with contemporary disorder, recursivity, and the possibility of a transcendent, redeeming love, with the line between diegetic and non-diegetic sound not always fully decipherable.

Dramatic high points of the film include mesmerizing performances by both of the film’s leads, Rooney Mara and Ryan Gosling, as well as a particularly memorable appearance by poet/singer-songwriter Patti Smith (as herself) who serves as spiritual guide and moral compass to Mara’s Faye (a secular analog perhaps to Javier Bardem’s Father Quintana in TO THE WONDER).

I suspect many viewers will attempt to dismiss the renegade humanism of this film as a front, or worse, misconstrue Malick’s “blessed rage for order” as simple, reactionary conservatism. The film is, however, at its core a timely message of love that carries no judgement. Along with its literal and spiritual predecessors, TO THE WONDER and KNIGHT OF CUPS, this film is just as worthy of our attention as the director’s earlier, more widely celebrated work.

An artsy romantic drama brought to you by writer director Terrence Malick whose credits ranged from "Badlands 1973," "The Tree of Life 2011" to "Knight of Cups 2016." Besides the obvious hip and sexy cast, the cinematography was truly intoxicating and nearly each "scene to scene" was accompanied with lyrical dialogue and music, as from "song to song." As to the story, it was a believable glimpse into the lives of the people in the Austin TX. music landscape. If you did not enjoy "Knight of Cups," skip this.

What the heck was this? I got about 15 mins in and couldn't take any more. STUNK.
Just. Don't. Do. It. Not to mention the seasickness from the choppy camera work...ugh.
