Teri Garr and Mickey Rooney star in this heartwarming adventure about a boy who forges a special friendship with a wild stallion after both are shipwrecked on a deserted island.

Adapted from the beloved novel by Walter Farley, this 1979 family classic was hailed by no less than hard-to-please critic Pauline Kael, who wrote that "it may be the greatest children's movie ever made." A visual feast from start to finish, the timeless tale of The Black Stallion plays out on almost mythic terms.

Though the camerawork in "The Black Stallion" was often-times quite impressive. Indeed.... For the most part - I found myself frequently "riding the fence" when it came to my overall appreciation for this 1979 adventure picture about an ordinary boy and a magnificent horse.

I mean - When you really think about it - How can one really be taken in by this film's cinematic splendour when it becomes quite apparent that the only likable character in this picture was, of course, the horse? (which, by the way, wasn't black, at all - but, instead, a very deep, dark brown)

Set in the year 1946 - Yes. This film's attention to detail was certainly noteworthy, at times (with many of the latter scenes shot in Toronto) - But, unfortunately, its 2-hour running time turned into a major endurance test for me, where just about every scene seemed to be unnecessarily prolonged beyond the point of rational comprehensibility.

You will love the beauty and simplicity of this movie, I hope. Great scenes with the horse and the boy, which are just delightful. Mickey Rooney in a movie? What could be better. Believe me, you'll love it!

I wouldn't have believed it possible, but the true star of Black Stallion is the beautiful Arabian horse picked to be found on the beach by a young boy. That young boy is perfectly played by Kelly Reno. He has a sparkle in his eyes. Watch how he learns to be a friend to the Black Stallion. Kelly is really a great horse back rider and it pulls no punches. He and the horse capture your imagination. Give credit to a wonderful director in Carroll Ballard. He is a thoughtful director who lets the story beautifully unfold. The cinematography of the beach, ranch and racetrack are spectacular. You will be clutching your fists cheering for the Black Stallion. The movie does have one star I want to mention. The loveable Mickey Rooney is amazing and amusing as the Black Stallion's horse trainer. It must have felt wonderful to Mickey to at an advanced age get a really big part. After all, other than Teri Garr as Kelly's mom, there are no stars in the Black Stallion. This is a must see movie with the special feature that the whole family will love it.

This is a 1979 American film based on the 1941 classic children's novel "The Black Stallion" by Walter Farley.
It tells the story of Alec Ramsay, who is shipwrecked on a desert island, together with a wild Arabian stallion whom he befriends.
After being rescued, they are set on entering a race challenging two champion horses.
It is directed by Carroll Ballard.
The movie stars Kelly Reno who plays Alec, Mickey Rooney who plays a retired jockey, and the Arabian horse Cass Ole.
After the shipwreck, Alec awakens alone on the shore of an uninhabited island.
At first he is sad and frightened.
Exploring, he comes upon the horse, trapped again by his ropes which have become caught in some rocks.
He realizes the stallion had surely saved him from drowning.
Once more he manages to free it, but it runs away.
He discovers means to survive by catching fish and gathering seaweed.
One morning he awakens to find himself eye to eye with an angry cobra.
He is paralyzed with fear.
Suddenly the horse appears and tramples it, saving his life once again, but then immediately runs off.
Then Alec tries to gain the trust of the Black on the beach.
Although it is based on the children's novel, any adult can appreciate and enjoy the friendship between the boy and the horse.
