Very apt presentation of a graphic novella. Graphic violence, but it is done quickly without lingering over blood or gore. Blood is well represented in the color washing of this digital movie. Thru' computerized methods, color is faded out of & in to the photography. The use of sepia tones for the more real life portions of this film aids continuity of the basic story. Shots of animals & insects represent the general decay of the participants in the story. Costumes are excellent & build character into even small roles. The jumpy cuts work well with the pace & frames of reference within The Last Rites of Ransom Pride. Religion & the Law are no match for these brutal individuals who seem guided by an inner moral code that has little to do with right or wrong. These folks just want their way, no matter the consequences to others. People are attempting to right wrongs, balance karma, or settle scores mainly thru' killing & toture, & rape/sex. Sometime money. These people are very warped & the lawlessness of the Old West in a fine setting for these renegades to thrive amidst chaos. Thanks to Ray Wylie Hubbard, co-writer, director, editor, music people, DP, production crew, & all who contributed to this minor masterpiece. I wouldn't have found it had I not heard about RWH's new book on public radio, then searched for it at local library. This brings to mind El Topo & Kill Bill 1 & 2. Difficult to watch but well worth it for its artistry!
