Stunning evocation of place and its hold, for better and worse, on generations whose attraction never falters despite changes over the years. And all written in graceful, imaginative prose.
The wealthy Porter family spends every summer at their compound on Cape Cod, generation after generation. In this stunning novel, the story of their summers is told through the voices of various observers: Helen, the spirited eldest daughter: Bea, the Scottish nanny to the youngest daughter Janie; and Charlie, Helen’s nature-loving son. The location, Ashaunt Point, is as much a character as anyone else. Graver’s luminous writing makes the reader feel the icy sea water and long to sip lemonade on the porch. Ranging from 1942, when their point is invaded by the army watching for enemy submarines, through 1999, we see the generations unfold as the world changes around them, and ultimately changes them and their beloved summer sanctuary. Highly recommended – but not for action fans! Reviewed by DC
