An excellent read, engaging and not overly demanding. You care about the characters, and you get some interesting twists, like Johanna's upgrade of their shotgun ammunition. Definitely a thumbs up!

I read this after seeing Tom Hank's portrayal of Kidd on the screen. As usual, the movie missed much of the richer character development found in the book. I struggled with reading the dialog without quotation marks, but pushed through,…

It took me long enough to read this bestseller by novelist Paulette Jiles! In this relatively short novel, a grizzled veteran and a twice-orphaned girl caught between two worlds find themselves unlikely companions on an adventure across…

"The writing is simple, poetic, descriptive; I loved the characters, they were richly written even with minimal dialogue. Nice historical fiction about post-Civil War era" - Mindy R.

Not typically the historical fiction I tend to read, but that might change. This was a great story!

Loved this wonderful story and the western feel it has. Looking forward to seeing the movie now.

More than a vignette, less than a novel; I loved Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd and this brief little book.

An interesting story about a former Confederate Officer in Texas taking a young girl back to her relatives. She had been captured by the Kiowa when 6 and now is 10. A rather predictable ending.

I saw the movie first, which I greatly enjoyed. And I enjoyed the novel because there were enough differences to still make it an interesting read. The two stories shared many parallels, but the book was able to delve deeper into the…

Regardless of the lack of punctuation (quotation marks), which I see as simple cutting corners to save editing, I enjoyed the story very much. Looking forward to the movie with Tom Hanks.

Loved this book! I must preface with the fact that I grew up in the Texas Hill Country and my parents/grandparents are all from frontier areas along the Oklahoma border mentioned in the book. This is is the story of a very rough, chaotic…

Sombre, almost soothing. A rocky bonding between characters over a vast cultural divide. Sometimes heartbreaking and sometimes humourous. The movie version with Tom Hanks does the novel justice.

Captain Kidd agrees to take the young girl, Johanna, back to her people. I didn't expect their bond to become so strong. It's a family by choice type of story, and I couldn't have been more satisfied with it. It made me cry happy tears…

This is an excellent read. Knowing that a movie has been made based on this book gave a picture of Tom Hanks as sensitive, kind, and courageous Captain Kidd. Kidd and orphan, Johanna, made difficult choices, upheld their values and lived…

I listened to a coworker rave about this for years, but never read it until my book club chose it. I read the audiobook, narrated by the great Grover Gardner, and absolutely loved it.

Good read. An incredible journey for the man taking a young girl home to her people in Texas after she was kidnapped at age 6. The movie stars Tom Hanks and it was if that book and character were written for him.
