I found this movie to be a great backstory to the wonderful books about Winnie the Pooh. It was very enjoyable to visit Ashdown Forest and see some of the inspiration behind the book -- although there is lots of sadness here too. First book I've read by this author. Found it to be a good summer read -- involving books (being stolen, written, sold, read, discussed), writers (some successful, some struggling -- but all with lots to say), walks along the beach (past and present), and a central character (Mercer) who finds herself caught up in much more than she expects. The ending leaves a few things to the reader's imagination (and that was fine with me).First book I've read by this author. A well-written and very enjoyable book. Lillian takes the reader on a long walk through the streets of New York City on New Year's eve (1984). As she walks, she shares the humour, happiness and some of the sadness of her life as a career "girl" in the 1930s, a published poet, someone who fell unexpectedly but totally in love (love at first sight) twice in her life (with the man who became her husband (who would have thought one could be hit by lightening while indoors), and with her new born son) -- the husband didn't last, but the son did -- and someone who feels that New York City is still her home (at the age of 84). But just a warning, some of the low points in her long life were very low indeed.A well-written and very enjoyable book. I enjoyed this book very much. Most of the first half of the book is spent rowing on the laguna in hot July weather (great for summer reading, or winter reading when one wishes to be reminded of summer). The death was not unexpected, the search for the truth was interesting, and the final "reveal" made for as good an ending as one could hope for in the mystery book.I enjoyed this book very much. I really enjoyed this book. The story is mostly about family, community and dealing with (and sometimes preventing) personal tragedy through personal determination and the kindness of others -- all this is combined with some delightful bits of humour.I really enjoyed this book. This Great Courses DVD package of four discs provides 24 lectures -- starting with pre-roman and roman London (e.g. the name london is thought to have come from a Celtic word for "wild") and ending with postwar London (including the 1960s and Millennial London). A well-acted British MI5 story. Most enjoyable (with no gunfire, and with very few people even raising their voice -- or "getting wobbly" as they refer to it in the program).

This movie is usually described by reviewers as "visually superb". The story centres on a man who lives alone in the desert and acts as a middle man between swordsmen and persons seeking revenge. As this man re-accounts stories of some of his old friends and clients he begins to see the truth of his own life more clearly.
Unfortunately this old version of Ashes of Time does not include English translation -- so the story (which has a lot of voice-over narration) is hard to follow for non-Chinese speaking viewers or those who do not already know the story. After watching this version, however, I went on to buy the recently restored version (entitled Ashes of Time Redux) which does include English subtitles. I would give the movie 5 stars, but gave the library's copy only 3.5 stars because of the lack of English subtitles. This movie is usually described by reviewers as "visually superb".
